Context
The Secretariat of Environment portal is the official state channel for transparency and environmental services. This project, developed as my final thesis, aimed to modernize the citizen experience and democratize access to public information.
Problem & Objective
The original site architecture had a high cognitive load, hindering access to critical data and causing high abandonment rates. Everyday citizens struggled to navigate the bureaucratic complexity of the information.
The objective was to restructure the platform to ensure accessibility and clarity, enabling any user, from researchers to citizens interested in environmental news, to find information in just a few clicks.
Process
Diagnosis: Exploratory research, CSD Matrixes, and interviews with the website administrator, combined with user questionnaires to map current pain points.
Definition: Creation of Personas and User Journeys to understand different access contexts.
Ideation: Card Sorting for Information Architecture and Wireframing to structure the new navigation.
Validation: Usability testing conducted with users and the administrator to validate the efficiency of the developed prototype.
Solution
New Information Architecture: I reorganized taxonomies and categories, reducing navigation depth and grouping services by usage logic rather than internal organizational charts.
Governmental Design System: I established a UI Kit that modernized the visual identity, maintaining institutional sobriety and ensuring consistency with the State Government brand.
Visual Hierarchy: A restructured Home page that prioritizes the most searched services (Top Tasks), validated through usability testing.
Results
This project was fundamental to my growth as a Product Designer, challenging me to solve problems involving high information density and structural complexity.
I learned firsthand the importance of not relying on assumptions, validating each step of the navigation with real tests.
Ultimately, I developed a deeper sensitivity for creating inclusive interfaces, understanding that public service design must work for all demographic profiles.
